Aftercare
Ears
Lobe · helix · forward helix · flat · conch · tragus · anti-tragus · daith · rook · snug · industrial
Every day
- Wash your hands first. Every time you touch it — which should be as little as possible.
- Rinse once or twice a day with sterile saline wound wash (spray can, no additives) or let clean shower water run over it.
- Dry it gently with clean paper towel or let it air dry. Cloth towels hold bacteria.
- Leave the jewelry alone. Don't twist, turn, or slide it — that tears the healing tissue.
Avoid until healed
- Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, ointments, tea tree or other oils, and homemade salt mixes
- Pools, hot tubs, baths, lakes, rivers and the ocean until healed
- Changing or removing the jewelry before it's healed — I'll do your downsize
- Makeup, lotion, sprays and perfume on or near the piercing
Specific to this piercing
- Don't sleep on it. A travel pillow with your ear in the hole works well for side sleepers.
- Keep things off it: clean your phone screen, and go easy on earbuds, headphones, hats, masks and helmets.
- Keep hair products away. Shampoo, conditioner, spray and dye — rinse the area well after washing your hair, and tie long hair back.
- Industrial: the two holes heal separately and one is often slower. Treat them as two piercings.
- Cartilage bumps are usually from pressure or movement — sleeping on it, a snagged hair, a short bar. Don't treat them with anything; text me and I'll check the fit.
What's normal
- Some bleeding, bruising, swelling and tenderness for the first days or weeks
- Itching, and whitish-yellow fluid that dries into a crust on the jewelry — this is lymph, not pus. Rinse it off; don't pick it.
- Good days and bad days. A piercing can look healed on the outside long before it is on the inside.
Typical healing time
Everyone heals at their own pace. Keep up the aftercare for the whole time, even once it feels fine.
When to get help
See a doctor if you notice redness that spreads, heat, pain that gets worse instead of better, thick yellow, green or grey discharge with a smell, red streaks, or a fever or chills. If you have a heart condition, see a doctor straight away for any fever after a piercing.
Don't take the jewelry out if you think it's infected unless a doctor tells you to — removing it can close the infection in. Text me too, so I know.
A rash, constant itching, or a hole that seems to be getting bigger can be a metal sensitivity. Text me and we'll sort it.
Your downsize is free. At 6–8 weeks the swelling's gone and the longer starter bar can snag and shift — come back and I'll swap it for a snug one. Book it before you leave.
